CHAPTER 17

MILES KNEW THE MINUTE HE opened his front door it would be a long evening. In fact, he had known an hour before, when she called to confirm she would be there by seven. The irritated edge to her voice was all too familiar. Did all women have that tone when men failed to deliver whatever expectations they built up in their minds?

Probably so. He had grown accustomed to that same frustrated sigh of agitation in every woman in his life—his mother, his sister, his assistant, his would-be girlfriend, and now, Farin.

“You’d said we’d meet as soon as you got back.” She stomped inside and shed her wig and dark glasses. “That was two weeks ago.”

He told her to make herself at home and offered her something to drink. “I can explain,” he called over his shoulder as he went to fetch her iced tea and a cold beer for himself. In fairness, she had some explaining of her own to do.

He returned to catch her scrunching her face as she beheld the living room. Stacked boxes, most of which were still taped shut, occupied much of the house. Better than it was before she got there, though. At least he had cleared enough space so they could sit and talk.

“You didn’t tell Jeanne who I am, did you?” She tossed her purse on top of the boxes stacked beside the end table and took a seat. “She doesn’t even ask who I am anymore when I call you at work. Like she already knows.”

He placed her iced tea on the coffee table, then flopped down onto the opposite end of the couch and drank his beer. “Jeanne’s the best assistant I’ve ever had. She’s sharp, and she’s smart. She probably stopped asking because she knows whoever you are, you’re the only one who calls and refuses to identify herself. Besides, Chris is the only person I’ve talked to about you.”

The mention of his name elicited a subtle change in her demeanor. Less aggressively, she asked, “How is he?”

“You didn’t read my review? I’m wounded.”

She sighed that special female tone of irritation. “The shows were good. Mirage made a surprise appearance. They’re backing him for the rest of the tour. Blah, blah, blah. I wanna know what you didn’t write. How’s he doing?”

Miles stretched his arms atop the couch. “I’d say he’s doing as well as can be expected considering he’s recently divorced, doesn’t know who killed his brother, and can’t resolve his feelings for you.”

Farin shifted uncomfortably. “Anyway, where’ve you been? I thought you wanted to go over that email.”

He sat his beer down on the table. “If I’m gonna help you, Farin, you need to help me.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means let’s talk about your dad.”

The confused expression on her face transformed into something resembling a combination of fear and sorrow. “What about him?”

He glanced at the ceiling. “When I asked you on the phone that night how he died, you said it was a drunk driver.
